ATP and WTA announce to not award ranking points at this year’s Wimbledon, know how it affects Novak Djokovic and Emma Raducanu

Yesterday it was announced by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) that the governing bodies of tennis will not award points at this year’s Wimbledon Championships. The decision was taken by the ATP and WTA in response to Russian and Belarusian players being barred from competing in the grass-court Grand Slam following the invasion of Ukraine.

Both the ATP and WTA have criticised the move, claiming that players work hard to earn those points and maintain their positions. Both tennis governing bodies chose to support and have their position heard and to have their stance on their “fundamental principle” of not being an example of favouring “discrimination based on nationality” all around the world. They also stated that they will continue to stand by this decision to not support something which discriminates against players on their nationality.

The organisers of the Wimbledon Championships expressed disappointment following ATP and WTA’s decision to remove ranking points. But they also stated that they continue to stand by their decision and the Russian and Belarusian players are still prohibited from taking part in the championship this year.

How does this decision by ATP and WTA affect Novak Djokovic and Emma Raducanu?

Many players came in support to criticise Wimbledon’s decision of banning players on nationality. Many players are also criticising the session of ATP and WTA fir the removal of the ranking points from this year’s Wimbledon championship as they won’t be able to defend points on grass.

Following the removal of the ranking points, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will apparently won’t be able to defend his 2,000 ranking points being a defending champion. He is also a threat of losing his No. 1 position in the ATP rankings. Matteo Berrettini is also set to lose 1,2000 points, the runner up of the last year’s grass-court Grand Slam and might get out of the top 10 ATP rankings.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Emma Raducanu doesn’t escape from the danger. She will also lose the 240 ranking points in WTA which she gained by reaching the Round of 16 at the last year’s Wimbledon Championships.
