Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

The tournament will include ten players. With Armageddon, the Tournament is a round-robin event. The pairings will be done using Berger tables. At the technical meeting, a lot will be drawn. A blitz event precedes nine classical rounds in this competition.

After move 40, each player will have 120 minutes on the clock, with a 10-second increment. If the classical game ends in a tie, the players will go to Armageddon within 20 minutes of the draw. Each game will have a winner because if the game finishes in a tie, the black pieces will win.

3 points will be credited for winning in the main game. Meanwhile, a player will get 1.5 points if he draws in the main game but wins Armageddon and will get 1 point for a tie in the main game plus defeat in Armageddon.

Norway Chess 2022 List of Players

The organisers of the Norway Chess Super Tournament unveiled a lineup that includes numerous surprises for this year’s 10th edition, which runs from May 31 to June 11. Magnus Carlsen, the four-time winner, leads the field, but Richard Rapport and Teimour Radjabov, who will compete in the Candidates Tournament only six days after their last game in Stavanger, have accepted invites. Ex-World Champions Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov, as well as Wang Hao, who retired last year, have all done so.

In 2022, the famed super event in Stavanger will celebrate its tenth edition, although the organisers experienced some challenges this year. Due to the Candidates Tournament commencing just six days after the final game in Stavanger, many of the greatest players are unable to participate this year.

Since the invasion of Ukraine, the organisers have made it plain that Russians are not welcome in Stavanger. One of the players that was supposed to play was Alexander Grischuk, but the invitation was rescinded. Anish Giri, Wesley So, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave will be also competing in the event, which means there will be no player under the age of 25.
