Norway Chess 2022 Schedule, Date, Format, and Players

The Norway Chess Championship started on May 31 and culminated on June 10, 2022. Ten players competed in a single round-robin match with a 10-second increment after move 40 and a 120-minute time restriction. The scoring system was three points instead of one point for a win. If the game was tied, the players played an Armageddon game, with the winner receiving 1.5 points and the loser receiving one.

Every day, the matches started at 5 p.m. local time and ended at 9:30 p.m. local time. The last round of the 2022 Norway Chess was Round Nine.

Final Results, Standings, Nail-biting Race Decided, And Winner

Veselin Topalov held the World Champion Magnus Carlsen to a draw, meaning Shakhriyar Mamedyarov would have won the title if he had defeated his countryman Teimour Radjabov in classical chess. That appeared to be the case at one point, but Teimour fought back to survive a difficult situation with no time on his hands. Vishy Anand finished third, ahead of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who finished fourth.

The last round of Norway Chess would be the only one without a classic victory, with Armageddon deciding all five match-ups. Some players had a slim chance of winning the tournament elsewhere, but they needed to win their classical game first. Instead, Vishy Anand forced a 22-move draw against Aryan Tari, with the 5-time World Chess Champion’s title aspirations virtually ruined the day before by a one-move blunder.

The title aspirations of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave were dashed when he drew with Anish Giri, but the Frenchman bounced back with a resounding victory in Armageddon. Maxime’s 4th place finish and 5.4 rating point increase was remarkable, but it could have been much better if he’d found one of the wins he missed versus Magnus.
