Magnus Carlsen took sole lead at the Norway Chess Tournament with an amazing win in the classical game against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. Carlsen has 12.5 points after six rounds, one more than second-placed Vishy Anand, who won with black in Armageddon against Anish Giri on Monday.

The matches start at 5 p.m. local time every day and end at 9:30 p.m. local time. Meanwhile, the blitz event took place on the first day from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. local time. Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

The Norway Chess Championship will be held from May 31 to June 10, 2022. The competition is a single round-robin for ten players, with a 10-second increment after move 40 and a 120-minute time restriction. Instead of one point for a victory, the scoring system is three points. If the game is tied, the players compete in an Armageddon game, in which the winner receives 1.5 points and the loser receives one.

Magnus Carlsen defeated Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in classical chess and took sole possession of the lead with three rounds remaining in Norway Chess 2022. All of the other matches ended in Armageddon, with Anish Giri losing to Vishy Anand, 52, who is only one point behind Magnus. Wesley So, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Veselin Topalov were also victorious.

In Round 6, Magnus Carlsen was the only player to pick all three points for a classic victory. With three rounds remaining, Wesley stands 1.5 points behind Vishy Anand and 2.5 points behind Magnus after today’s matches. Magnus now has a FIDE rating of 2870.4, still a long way from his record of 2889.2, but 64.4 points ahead of second-placed Ding Liren, who has a rating of 2806.

In Round 7, Wesley will face Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with Black, which will be a difficult match given their remarkable lifetime score of 5 victories to 1 in Maxime’s favour. Vishy Anand is playing White against Teimour Radjabov, while Magnus is playing Black versus Aryan Tari, a fellow Indian.

The total prize pool for the tournament is 2,500,000 NOK, with the winner receiving 750,000 NOK and the runner-up receiving 400,000 NOK. The monetary rewards will be split evenly among participants who have the same number of points. This does not apply to the first prize, though.
