Daniil Medvedev is the defending champion on the tour. The Russian seemed the favorite coming into this match and won the match comfortably in the end. However, Hurkacz who defeated Medvedev in the Wimbledon this year got off to a great start by sealing in the first set but became a victim of his own expectations in the following set.
2. (1) Novak Djokovic Defeated (8) Casper Ruud – 7-6, 6-2
It was the second outing between the two, and as expected Novak emerged victorious in both of them. Yesterday was an easy day for the Serbian on the court as he defeated Ruud quite comfortably in straight sets.
3. Alexander Zverev Defeated Matteo Berrettini – 7-6, 1-0r
It was not at all an ideal start for the Italian who was playing in front of his home crowd in Turin. Berrettini who matched Zverev’s grace in the first set eventually had to retire due to injury in the second set.
Berrettini injured his Rib muscle in the 1st game of the second set and now even remains doubtful for his second-round game against Hurkacz.
As per reports, Berrettini’s participation can be confirmed only after further scans.
4. (5)Andrey Rublev defeated (4) Stefanos Tsitsipas – 6-4, 6-4
In the last match of the first round, the odds were proven wrong. 5th ranked Andrey Rublev defeated French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
It was indeed an easy outing for the Russian, as he dominated both the sets and won the match in straight sets. Tsitsipas was absolutely gutted by the defeat.
