Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev advanced to Saturday’s semi-finals in Turin with 2-1 group-stage records each. Both Ruud and Rublev’s lone defeats at the 2022 Nitto ATP Finals came at the hands of legendary players: Ruud lost to Rafael Nadal and Rublev to Novak Djokovic. When he faced Rafa, Norway’s Ruud had already advanced to the semifinals thanks to victories over Taylor Fritz and Felix Auger-Aliassime, which also secured first place in the Green Group.

Following the US Open, he had two victories, bringing his total to four wins. In their winner-take-all match that essentially served as a quarterfinal on Friday, Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas had no such luxury. The 25-year-old was facing certain defeat after falling to the Greek in a lopsided first set, but Rublev fought his way back and eventually defeated the Greek 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The World No. 7 was in the same situation at the Nitto ATP Finals a year ago, needing to win his final round-robin match to advance. He lost to Ruud in a close match by scores of 2-6, 7-5, and 7-6(5), falling just short of the semifinals. Rublev has an opportunity to exact revenge now that he has advanced to the elimination rounds for the first time in three successive appearances at the Nitto ATP Finals.

In three hours and eleven minutes, Djokovic, who had already clinched first place in the Red Group, overcame a tough opponent to win 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2). Prior to Djokovic bouncing back to force a tie-break, Medvedev had a 5-4 lead and was serving for the victory in the last game.

The men’s singles semifinal lineup is completed by Russian Andrey Rublev, who overcame a deficit to defeat Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece 3-6 6-3 6-2. Rublev, who finished second in the Red Group, advances to the semifinals where he will take on Casper Ruud of Norway.

Following other outcomes, Neal Skupski of Britain and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands both earned spots in the men’s doubles championship final. To defeat Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-6 (7-4) 7-6, Green Group champions Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic continued their winning streak.

As a result, Skupski and Koolhof, who defeated Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek earlier on Friday by scores of 7-5, 4-6, and 10-6, will now play British player Joe Salisbury and American player Rajeev Ram in the semifinals.
