The police said two Nihang Sikhs stabbed to death a 29-year-old Zomato delivery employee in Tilak Nagar, West Delhi, in the early hours of Wednesday over a trifling matter, even as locals said the two accused got into a dispute with the victim, Sagar Singh, because he was smoking.
Ghanshyam Bansal, the deputy commissioner of police (west), said the incident was reported to the police control room at 12:30 a.m. Residents informed the local police that the victim had been brought to the hospital when they arrived. Doctors at the hospital declared Sagar dead upon his arrival, he added.
“Sagar Singh, the victim, was stabbed in the chest. “According to the preliminary investigation, Singh had an argument with two people before being stabbed,” the DCP stated.
According to him, the police apprehended Harshdeep Singh, 22, a resident of adjacent Chander Vihar, based on the information acquired during the investigation, and the knife used in the murder was retrieved from him. According to the authorities, both accused are Nihangs, a Sikh warrior order.
The second suspect, according to Bansal, is being sought by authorities. “During questioning, Harshdeep informed the police that he and a companion were walking near a restaurant on Krishna Puri’s street number 13 when they came across Sagar obstructing their route. “They asked Sagar to move aside, but he rebuked them instead,” the DCP stated, adding that the suspect’s statements are being investigated.
However, Sagar’s family, another Zomato delivery person who contacted 911, and locals informed HT that the two accused got into a confrontation with Sagar because he was smoking.
Inder Pal (38), Sagar’s brother-in-law and a delivery agent, said Sagar used to work night shifts to get additional money and avoid traffic during the day.
“On June 15, around midnight, he received his first order, which had to be picked up from a restaurant near his house on street number 13.” Sagar left for work after dinner with his wife Satwant Kaur alias Komal and their 8-year-old son.
“Sagar was insulted for smoking by two Nihang Sikhs who were present near the eatery. The two Nihangs became enraged when Sagar informed them that he was smoking in an open area and refused to desist. Pal revealed that “they took out their kirpans (daggers) and stabbed him in the left side of the breast.”
Santosh Kumar, the proprietor of a building materials store below the restaurant, said he was asleep in his shop when he was awakened at midnight by a ruckus. “I discovered Sagar lying in a pool of his own blood outside my business when I came out.”
DCP Bansal stated that they are looking into the reports that Sagar was also attacked with bricks.
According to family members and Asif, the delivery agent who requested medical assistance, Sagar went 15-20 minutes without receiving assistance, resulting in substantial blood loss.
