Nick Kyrgios and Tseng Chun-hsin never played against each other.

Prediction

The 88th-ranked Chun-hsin Tseng will face World Number 20 Nick Kyrgios in the opening round of the 2022 Japan Open on Tuesday.

Given the outcomes of the year’s last major, Kyrgios would have believed he had a strong chance to win a Slam or at the very least move past his US Open quarterfinal loss. In a match where the Australian had a 1/4 chance of winning, Kyrgios fell to Karen Khachanov in five sets. Even though Kyrgios has always been a firebrand, the loss would have hurt even more given the past events.

Kyrgios had won the Washington Open title, reached the Montreal quarterfinals, and won the match against Daniil Medvedev before the US Open. Kyrgios hasn’t played in a competitive match on the court since that time. While rustiness might be a factor, Kyrgios is also facing off against a player who has never risen higher than 83rd in the world rankings.

With only three victories in matches played in the main draw and two more in Davis Cup, Tseng might not be the most fearsome opponent in this encounter. Tseng wants to see him fight in both of his matches like he did in Seoul last week.

Tseng, who was the second favourite going into the first round, won the opening set against Australian Christopher O’Connell before the match was called off. He was the favourite in the second round, but Aleksandra Kovacevic beat him in a gruelling three-setter.

Tseng lost, but there were indications that his fighting skills should not be discounted.
Despite the fact that Kyrgios will be the overwhelming favourite in this match, Tseng might offer some opposition. Will that, however, be enough for him to get a set.
