Prediction

Taylor Fritz, 24, entered the Japan Open with a career-high ATP world ranking of 11th after having his best season to date. However, he has been having trouble with his form ever since losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets at Wimbledon this summer. The American claimed his maiden Masters victory at Indian Wells in March and his second career triumph at the Eastbourne International in June, but he still needs to find a higher gear in order to compete at the absolute top of the sport.

Nick Kyrgios, the 20th-ranked player in the world, has always had that extra gear, at least in terms of skill, but up until this year it appeared like the Australian would never be able to use it to its full potential. His adventure began back in January when he and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the Men’s Doubles at the Australian Open, but everything changed this summer when he came in second place to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

The two are having a good time in Tokyo this week, but Kyrgios lost a set to Kamil Majchrzak in his singles match on Thursday, which raises questions about how focused he should be for such a difficult task.

Fritz defeated Kyrgios in straight sets in their first encounter at the Cincinnati Open back in August, making him one of just a few players to do it this year. However, Kyrgios will be driven by revenge in this match because the third seed has so far needed three sets in both of his matches, suggesting he is still still developing. Choose to wager on an outright winner or back Australia to win at least a set.
