Nick Kyrgios will be fighting with J.J Wolf for the very first time as they need at the third round of the last Grand Slam of the year.
While Kyrgios did drop a set in his second-round match against Benjamin Bonzi, he recovered quickly enough to claim victory. The Aussie appeared to be in control for the majority of the match.
The Australian won 7-6 (3), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the US Open. Previously, he had never advanced past this stage of the competition. In a contest that lasted just under three hours, Kyrgios and Bonzi traded breaks early in the first set before the Australian won the next tie-breaker. The second set was tied at four sets apiece when Kyrgios broke a jittery Bonzi’s serve to win the match by two sets.
On the other hand, Wolf has an unusual Grand Slam tennis record. Except for the 2020 US Open, where he advanced past the qualifying round, he has never advanced past the qualifying round at any other Grand Slam events. And now, Wolf has repeated that performance at Flushing Meadows by defeating Alejandro Tabilo in the second round.
Like Kyrgios, Wolf was forced into a fourth set, but he recovered from dropping the first set to win by scores of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and 6-3 as the match progressed.
Kyrgios, who easily defeated Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round, will now aim for his first-ever spot in the fourth round of the US Open. Given his dedication, Kyrgios may once again triumph, but this time he might drop a set.
