Every year, the National Hockey League holds the entry draft, which allows every franchise the chance to improve their line-ups by gaining the rights to qualified players. Players may be selected from junior leagues, professional leagues abroad, or collegiate teams.

When is the NHL draft?
Every year, in June, two to three months after the NHL regular season ends, the draft is typically held. The 2022 NHL Entry Draft is currently slated to take place in July.
What city hosts the NHL draft?
One of the 31 NHL teams hosts the draft, and the league chooses the location after receiving bids.
Who is qualified to be drafted by the NHL?
North American players must be 18 years old by September 15 or younger by December 31 of the draught year. American athletes who are undrafted after turning 20 are considered unrestricted free agents and can sign with any team.
Players from outside of North America are eligible after the age of 20 because they must be drafted before signing with an NHL franchise.
What happens during the NHL draft?
The 31 NHL teams are placed in a selection order that is based on a variety of variables. The selection order is mostly intended to favour the weakest teams that had dismal seasons, similar to how it is with all major American sports.
Thus, the following essential arrangement is established:
- the teams who did not advance to the postseason.
- the clubs that qualified for the playoffs but did not win their division or advance to the conference championship game.
- the top-placed teams in each division who missed the Conference Finals.
- the groups that suffer defeats in the conference finals.
- the Stanley Cup Finals team that was defeated.
- the Stanley Cup-winning squad.
The points total from the previous regular season determines the exact order of the clubs within each group; the team with the lowest total will make the first selection.
What is the NHL draught lottery?
The draught lottery has additional effects on the selection order. To determine who gets the first three picks in the draught, a lottery is held among the 15 clubs that did not make the playoffs the previous season.
The teams with the lowest point totals from the previous season have higher odds of winning the lottery. The likelihood of winning the lottery is 18.5 per cent for the team with the worst record and 1% for the team with the 15th-worst record.
The teams continue to be listed in the order decided by regular-season records if they do not receive one of the top three selections in the lottery. A team will select fourth, for instance, if it has the worst regular-season record but does not receive one of the top three picks in the lottery.
No team can move more than three spots down the list because the lottery only determines the top three choices.
How many rounds are there in the draught?
Since there are seven rounds in each draught, each team is given seven possible picks each year. However, this does not imply that every team will select seven players in every draught. This is due to the fact that teams are free to exchange draught picks.
How do trades function?
NHL teams can include future draught picks as trade assets, therefore draught picks are effectively commodities to them. For illustration, a team might exchange a player for a player from another team together with a future first-round choice.
This implies that in every draught, some teams have the right to more than one selection in a given round while others have no rights to any selections at all.
