Some NHL clubs are still focused on the current season as they attempt to make their way through the Playoffs, know the 2022 draft lottery rules

The ultimate aim is to win the Stanley Cup and prevent the Tampa Bay Lightning from completing a three-peat.

However, for half of the NHL clubs who did not make the playoffs, preparation for next season is already high on the priority list. The first step is the 2022 NHL draught lottery, which will decide the selection order as teams compete for the finest prospects.

The NHL Draft Lottery Will Begin In 2022:

The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery will determine the order of the first 16 choices in the 2022 Upper Deck NHL Draft on Tuesday (6:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, ESPN+, SN, SN NOW, TVAS) from NHL Network studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.

The 2022 draught will be placed at the Bell Centre in Montreal. The first round will take place on July 7, followed by rounds 2-7 on July 8.

There will be two lottery drawings, one for the first and one for the second. After the top two selections are determined, teams will be assigned in the order in which they finished in the regular-season standings.

How does it work?

Each of the 16 clubs that did not qualify for the Playoffs is given a weight based on their final place in the regular-season standings. The first and second overall choices are then drawn, however, the NHL has made a few alterations in recent years.

To begin, no team may be the ‘winner’ of the NHL draught twice in a five-year span however, this does not begin until 2022. If the Montreal Canadians win the draught lottery, they will not be eligible again until 2027. Second, teams ranked 12 through 16 are ineligible to win the 2022 NHL draught lottery.

Furthermore, teams may only move up to 10 choices if they win one of the lottery drawings. According to a rule published by the NHL on March 23, 2021. Only the top 11 clubs in the lottery are eligible for the first overall pick in the 2022 draught.
