NHL All-Star Game format
The format of the NHL All-Star Game differs from that of the regular game. The NHL All-Star Game is divided into two halves of ten minutes each, with three-on-three play. The players are usually separated into four teams, which compete in two semi-finals. The winner moves directly to the final; however, if the game is a tie, a three-round shootout will be held to determine the All-Star Game champion.
How players are chosen for NHL All-Star Game?
The NHL All-Star team is chosen by votes cast. Initially, a captain is chosen by voting, which begins earlier in the season. Fans can vote for any player regardless of position. In the NHL, as in the NBA, the player with the most votes from each division is named captain of their team.
There are 44 slots in the All-Star Game, including the captains, and once the captains are chosen, the remaining 40 players are chosen by NHL Hockey Operations Departments each season.
Teams
The Atlantic, Metropolitan, Pacific, and Central teams compete in the NHL All-Star game. Each squad has 11 players in total, including six forwards, three defensemen, and two goalkeepers.
