The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I on January 15, 1967, to win the inaugural NFL championship trophy. It was simply called a championship trophy, even though it was engraved with the words “World Professional Football Championship”.
In September of 1970, the trophy was renamed in honour of the late renowned Packers coach Vince Lombardi.

Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner, met with Oscar Riedner, the vice president of Tiffany & Co. in 1966. Riedner drew the pattern that would eventually be the trophy’s design.
The winning team’s annual trophy still has the same appearance as when it was drawn, which featured a football in the kicking position on a three-sided stand. The trophy is made by Tiffany and takes four months to finish for each NFL season.
Since 2017, Cumberland, Rhode Island, has been the site of the trophy presentation, having previously been made in New Jersey.
