The Next Gen ATP Finals are in their sixth year, and previous editions have included shorter sets with first-to-four games and other experimental format alterations. The new rules prohibited substitutions after the first game of each set and only permitted one sit-down after three games. They also mandated a 15-second serve clock following aces, double-faults, and unreturned serves, as well as coaching during an opponent’s bathroom or medical break.

By defeating Jiri Lehecka in straight sets twice this week, American Brandon Nakashima maintained his perfect record and won the Next Gen ATP Finals on Saturday. Nakashima had to come back after falling behind 3-1 in the first set and had to fend off two set points in the second set tiebreaker. In the first game, Nakashima’s serve was broken by Lehecka, who was playing for both revenge and the championship. But Nakashima came back with a break in the sixth game to force a tiebreaker, when the American jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and won the tiebreaker and the set. Lehecka posed a similar threat to open the second game, but Nakashima was able to hold off two break points early on. The following service break, which occurred in the tournament’s final game, would in fact turn out to be the most significant.

Having fallen against fellow countryman Sebastian Korda in the semifinals of the previous competition, this was Nakashima’s second appearance at the Next Gen Finals.
