Nehru Trophy Boat Race history

An annual vallam kali event called the Nehru Trophy Boat Race takes place at Punnamada Lake, close to Alappuzha, Kerala, India. Although the term Vallam Kali or Vallamkaliy technically translates to “boat play/game,” it can also signify “boat race” in English.

The race’s most watched event is the Chundan Vallams (snake boats) competition. For this reason, the English name for the race is also Snake Boat Race.

Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru launched this boat race in 1952, and it originated in the Kerala district of Alappuzha. The victor received a trophy bearing Jawaharlal Nehru’s name.

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race was added to the newly formed Champions Boat League (CBL) in 2019[, and Star Sports Network was chosen to serve as its television broadcast partner. The COVID-19 outbreak forced the league to postpone the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
