Neeraj Chopra is again in the headlines. On Saturday, India’s javelin thrower Chopra won the gold medal in the Kuortane Games in Finland.

He finished first, ahead of Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago and world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, with a best throw of 86.69m.
His best throw which is also a national record saw him win a silver medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland and stood at a distance of 89.30m.

On August 7, 2021, Neeraj Chopra made history by capturing India’s first-ever gold medal in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics.
Neeraj Chopra, a javelin thrower, won India’s first-ever gold medal in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics on August 7, 2021. The 23-year-old claimed first place in the men’s javelin throw final with a best throw of 87.58 metres. Apart from becoming a gold medalist at the Olympics, Neeraj also served in the Indian Army as a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and is now known as Naib Subedar. He is from the Khandra hamlet near Panipat in Haryana, where his family is heavily active in the agriculture industry.
Achievements Of Neeraj Chopra
At the end of 2012, Neeraj won the U-16 national championship. He earned his first international medal (silver) at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok two years later. He won his first national senior medal with a throw of 77.33 metres at the Inter-State tournament in Chennai in 2015, and he followed it up with a gold at the National Open Championships in Kolkata just a few months later.
Neeraj Chopra, on the other hand, really came into his own in 2016. When he won gold in the South Asian Games in Guwahati with a throw of 82.23 metres, he made history. With a throw of 86.48 metres in the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, Neeraj also won gold.
Neeraj won gold at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships with a throw of 85.23 metres. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he achieved a new season-best of 86.47 metres in the men’s javelin throw, becoming the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games javelin throw. In May 2018, he broke the national record for the second time with a throw of 87.43 metres at the Doha Diamond League.
In August 2018, he made his Asian Games debut for India, and he was also the Indian contingent’s flag-bearer at the Asian Games Parade of Nations. On August 27, he won gold in the Men’s Javelin Throw with a throw of 88.06 metres, breaking his own national record.
In the run-up to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which had been postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, German coach Uwe Hohn improved Neeraj’s throwing technique from 2018 to 2019.

Awards
He was awarded the Arjuna Award for his outstanding performance at the Asian Games in 2018. For his persistent sporting exploits, he was awarded the coveted Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in 2020. He was awarded the Khel Ratna Award, also known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, for his performance at the 2021 Olympics, India’s highest athletic honour.
