Every time Neeraj Chopra picks up a javelin, the entire country of India holds its breath.
The Indian javelin throw champion also rarely disappoints, regularly winning gold and setting records.
The gold medal Neeraj Chopra won in Tokyo 2020 might have been the pinnacle of his brief but eventful career thus far.

With a best throw of 87.58 metres in the finals, Neeraj Chopra, who is in his early twenties, became the second Indian, after shooter Abhinav Bindra, to win an individual gold medal at the Summer Games.
Additionally, he was the first track and field athlete from India to win an Olympic gold medal.
Even with Neeraj Chopra’s second-best throw of 87.03m in the Japan National Stadium during the Tokyo 2020 men’s javelin throw finals, the gold medal would have been guaranteed.
With a throw of 86.67 metres, Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won silver.
Interestingly, despite how important it may have been, Neeraj Chopra’s personal best throw isn’t the 87.58m one that earned him the gold medal at the Olympics. It actually just scrapes into the top 10.
Neeraj Chopra also held the previous three national records, which were 89.30 metres set at the Paavo Nurmi Games in 2022, 88.07 metres set at the Indian Grand Prix 3 in 2021 in Patiala, and 88.06 metres set at the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018.
Neeraj Chopra has gone over 85 metres a total of 39 times. All of these initiatives took place in June, with three of them taking part at the Paavo Nurmi Games and four at the Stockholm Diamond League 2022.
The Doha Diamond League in 2023 saw the addition of four 85+ scores.
The Oregon 2022 qualification round was Neeraj Chopra’s greatest performance at the World Athletics Championships, as he threw an 88.39m. His final attempt, which had a length of 88.13m, secured India’s first-ever silver medal.
Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
This attempt came after Chopra’s attempt to break the under-20 world record of 86.48 metres, which assisted in gaining international prominence.
The Indian athlete’s gold-winning effort at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was just a hair shorter, coming in at 86.47m.
