โ€œNeal Adams was an amazing illustrator, he changed comics. I loved his take on Batman. It was lithe, acrobatic, and dynamic. Nealโ€™s work continues to inspire me. This is a huge loss for the entire industry.โ€

Letโ€™s find out more about him:

Who Was Neal Adams?

Neal Adamsย was a comic book artist from the United States. Heย was born on Governors Island in New York City on June 15, 1941. He was born into a military family and grew up on army posts all around the world, from Brooklyn to Germany. He was a Jew. Adams graduated from the School of Industrial Art high school in Manhattan in 1959.

He was a co-founder of Continuity Associates, a graphic design business, and a creators’ rights champion who helped Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster get a pension and acknowledgement for their work on Superman. For DC Comics, Adams co-created the characters Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat, and John Stewart.

In 1998, Adams was nominated for the Eisner Award’s Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, the Harvey Award’s Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Inkwell Award’s Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame in 2019.

He was married to Cory Adams, the comic colorist and the couple had one daughter, Zeea Adams who has also worked as a colorist.

His Career

His early work on the Ben Casey daily comic strip paved the way for a nearly six-decade creative career that included huge names like DC and Marvel. In 1970, he depicted an old Black man confronting Green Lantern, accusing him of not paying enough attention to the issues of people of race. It was deemed one of the most significant pages in the history of the American comic book by Vulture.

Adams collaborated on the scene with writer Dennis O’Neil, a long-time partner. They were the ones that brought Two-Face back to life and gave birth to Ra’s al Ghul. They were also the driving force behind John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes.

Adams’ career, however, included more than just comic book illustrations. He and Dick Giordano launched Continuity Studios in 1971, which specialised in graphic design, movie storyboards, and commercial graphics.

Adams was also recognised for his zealous support for creators’ rights; in the 1970s, he fought to unionise the comic book business and found the Comic Creators Guild. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the inventors of Superman, were also credited and compensated as a result of his work.
