NBA free agency kicks off on Friday, June 30, at 6 p.m. EST and teams can immediately negotiate and reach deals with players. July 1-6 is considered a negotiation period called the Free Agency Moratorium and as a result, contracts cannot be officially signed until 12:01 a.m. EST on July 6.
The NBA Finals were followed by the NBA Draft, and now that all picks have been selected, graded, and permanently inked, we move on to the beginning of the 2023 NBA offseason. The word “start” is a bit misleading. After all, we’ve already witnessed moves that sent John Collins to Salt Lake City, Bradley Beal to Phoenix, Kristaps Porziis to Boston, Marcus Smart to Memphis, Chris Paul to the Bay Area, and Jordan Poole to Washington. and a pre-free agency extension that kept Naz Reid in Minnesota (and brought the Timberwolves’ wage commitments to centres even closer to the “GDP of a robust global trade partner” territory).
This year’s free agent class lacks a famous names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, or LeBron James, but front offices looking to fill large roster openings will be able to find quality players on the open market. Even once all of that paperwork is settled, there is still a tonne of issues to resolve once the NBA’s annual free-agent feeding frenzy starts.

NBA free agency will start on Friday, June 30, at 6 p.m. ET. Teams can then begin negotiating with free agents at that stage.
The majority of contracts cannot be signed until Thursday, July 6, at 12:01 PM ET. However, before signing a contract with pen and paper, many athletes may agree to its conditions verbally first.
