The NBA draft lottery is an annual event in which teams that missed the playoffs the previous year compete in a lottery to decide their draught order in the NBA draught. In 1985, the NBA Draft lottery was established. Teams acquire the rights to amateur U.S. college basketball players and other qualifying players, including overseas players, in the NBA draught. The lottery winner will be chosen first in the draught.

A lottery pick is a draft pick whose position is selected by a lottery, whereas a lottery team is a non-playoff team that participates in the process.

Only the top four picks are picked by lottery under current rules, and they come from the 14 clubs that did not make the playoffs. The team with the weakest record, or the team with the worst record’s fradt rights, has the highest chance of obtaining a higher draft pick.

The remainder of the first-round draft order is in inverse order of the remaining teams’ win-loss record, or the clubs who originally held the rights if they were moved after the top four slots are selected (using the lottery slotting system). The draft order in later rounds of the draught is not determined by the lottery. The NBA has modified the lottery system since the 2019 draft.

The length of time the balls are mixed is monitored by a timekeeper who faces away from the machine and signals the machine operator after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed and the team whose logo is in the last envelope opened will have the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday, June 23.

The Draft selections for the remainder of the first round (No. 15-30) and the entire second round (No. 30-60), are determined by reverse order of regular season record and every NBA team gets one selection in the first round and one selection in the second round.

The 2022 Draft order for the remainder of the first-round will be determined at the end of the ongoing season.

Blazers Out!

The Portland Trail Blazers were back in the lottery for the first time since 2012, when they drafted Damian Lillard, after eight consecutive playoff appearances. On Tuesday, he was in attendance as their envoy, but he was unable to help them, as they were selected seventh overall.

While that wasn’t a huge decrease from the previous season’s sixth-worst record, they didn’t get the major boost they were expecting, and eventually needed to overhaul their team.
