A coach’s job requires a lot of work besides managing the team’s play; they look after the needs of players, boost players’ morale, act as critics and often times take the blame when a team underperforms.

The Seven Highest-Paid Coaches In The NBA

It is more difficult to gain information about the salaries of NBA coaches unlike player salaries, which are easily available. Back in 2021, sports website, Sportico, published an article listing the highest-paid sports coaches in the U.S.

Unsurprisingly, seven of these coaches belonged to coaches of NBA teams. Given below are the seven highest-paid coaches in the NBA according to their salary:

1. Gregg Popovich

Team – San Antonio Spurs

Salary – $11.5 million

Gregg Popovich, one of the most successful coaches of all-time in the NBA stands on top. This is no surprise as the San Antonio Spurs head coach has won five NBA titles and three Coach of the Year awards.

Besides that, he helped the Spurs secure an impressive 22 consecutive playoff berths spanning from 1998 to 2019.

2. Steve Kerr

Team – Golden State Warriors

Salary – $9.5 million

Following a successful playing career, Steve Kerr has been establishing himself as one of the finest NBA coaches.

Ever since he joined the Warriors as their head coach in 2014, he has been nothing short of inspiring. Under his leadership, the Warriors have won four NBA titles. He has also won the Coach of the Year award in 2016.

3.1 Doc Rivers

Team – Philadelphia 76ers

Salary – $8.5 million

Before joining the 75er back in 2020, Rivers coached quite a list of top teams. Rivers previously served as the head coach for Orlando Magic, Boston Celtics, and the Los Angeles Clippers.

He managed to win an NBA title with the Boston Celtics back in 2008. Moreover, Rivers won the Coach of the Year award with Orlando back in 2000.

3.2 Erik Spoelstra

Team – Miami Heat

Salary – $8.5 million

Spoelstra initially started his career in the NBA as a video coordinator with Miami back in 1995. He was incharge of putting game clips together to provide the team’s coaching staff with better data for upcoming opponents.

However, in 2008, the Miami Heats appointed him as their head coach. Following which, Erik has gone on to win the NBA tittle twice, back in 2012 and 2013.

4.1 Mike Budenholzer

Team – Milwaukee Bucks

Salary – $8 million

Budenholzer is one of Popovich’s pupils and started his coaching career with the Atlanta Hawks from 2013 to 2018 as their head-coach. He went on to help the team secure a second ever NBA title in 2021. So far, the NBA have named him Coach of the Year twice (2015, 2019).

4.2 Nick Nurse

Team – Toronto Raptors

Salary – $8 million

Nurse’s coaching career began with Northern Iowa in back in 1989 as an assistant coach. However, he relocated to England to play with the Derby Rams for a season, before becoming a player-coach the next season.

Following this, Nurse jumped around different coaching gigs and eventually entered the NBA through the then-D League back in 2007.

After serving as the assistant-coach for six years, the Raptors appointed him as their head-coach in 2019. He helped the franchise achieve its first ever title in that same year when he made his debut.

4.3 Steve Nash

Team – Brooklyn Nets

Salary – $8 million

Steve Nash has a very short coaching resume compared to the other coaches on the list. Nash just recently started his career as the Nets’ head coach back in 2020.

Nash has a successful player career where he twice won the NBA MVP and featured as an eight-time All-Star. Although he has had a difficult time transitioning to a coaching career, the upcoming 2022-23 campaign looks hopeful.
