Naresh Kumar, who famously mentored a young Leander Paes as India’s Davis Cup captain, died at 93. Jaidip Mukerjea, who made his Davis Cup debut under Kumar’s captaincy told PTI,

He was suffering from age-related issues since last week. I was told that his chance of survival was not very good. I’ve lost a great mentor.

Who Was Naresh Kumar?

Naresh Kumar was a well-known Indian Tennis player. He has been in the news because he died recently.

On December 22, 1928, he was born in Lahore, Punjab, British India (presently in Pakistan).

He was married to Sunita, an artist, and author. He has three children: a son named Arjun, and two daughters named Gita and Preah.

He passed away on September 14, 2022, in Kolkata. He was 93 years old when he passed away.

His Career

In 1949, Kumar made his tennis debut in the Asian Championships, and he and Ramanathan Krishnan went on to dominate Indian tennis for most of the 1950s. His Davis Cup career began in 1952, and he later served as team captain.

His best career high came three years later, in 1955, when he advanced to the Wimbledon fourth round before losing to the eventual victor and American No. 1 Tony Trabert.

Naresh Kumar has participated in record-breaking 101 Wimbledon matches as an amateur. The Irish Championships (1952 and 1953), Welsh Championships (1952), Essex Championships at Frinton-on-Sea (1957), and his victory in the Wengen event in Switzerland the following year were his five singles victories in his career.

In 1969, he participated in his last match in the Asian Championships. Later on, he instructed many tennis players. He also mentored Leander Paes during the Davis Cup for India’s match against Japan in 1990 as the non-playing captain of India.

He was an Arjuna Award winner and also received the Dronacharya Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, making him the first tennis coach to do so.
