Over the several years, N Sankar was involved with the management of numerous educational and many charitable organizations and fundraisers. Sankar was presently a member of the board of The CHILDS Trust. His sudden demise on Sunday following a very brief illness shocked everyone with his funeral taking place in the aftermath as tributes came in.

N Sankar was married to Chandra Sankar and he has a son named Vijay Sankar. His grandfather was SNN Sankar Iyer, founder of Sanmar Group. He did his BSc in technology from AC College of Technology. Later he attended the AM Jain college to pursue a master’s. The 76 year old’s brother, N Sankar is the vice-chairman of the company while son Vijay is the deputy chairman.
N Sankar was 76 years old and was serving as the Chairman of The Sanmar Group, operating in the core areas of chemicals, shipping, metals, and engineering. He had held office in numerous public bodies representing trade and industry, including the role of the president of Assocham from 1991 to 1992.

He has also been the Chairman of the Indo-US Joint Business Council from 1998 to 1999. Sanmar also served as the chairman of Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry and President of Madras Management Association from 1981 to 1987 among the others.
N Sankar was on the Board of the NOCIL, based in Mumbai, and the India Advisory Board of the FLSmidth, based in Denmark.
Sankar was the Chairman of The Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation and Chennai Heritage, and a member of the Board of Governors of The Indian Institute of the Management-Kozhikode. Apart from his businesses he was also interested in sports.
He held the positions of the Vice President of the All India Tennis Association, and the President of the state Tamil Nadu Cricket and Tennis Associations.
N Sankar also worked as the Honorary Consul General for Denmark in South India from 1989 to the year 2017 and was awarded the ‘Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog, First Class’ by the Danish Government in the recognition of his services.

I have known him over many decades and watched him lead the Sanmar group with foresight. Venu also added to his statement that he was always open to modern techniques and wanted to expand everything globally.”
