The Weider brothers devised the game so that Mr. Universe champions may compete in an additional event and increase their financial rewards. On September 18, 1965, in New York City, the first competition was place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Mr. Olympia has evolved into a full weekend of activities, complete with a fan expo and more advertising than ever before.
