MPL Indian Chess Tour Establishment and Schedule
The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s first regional expansion is the MPL Indian Chess Tour. Its debut demonstrates India’s meteoric rise in chess popularity.
The new MPL Indian Chess Tour is being hosted by Play Magnus Group (PMG), which was founded by World Champion Magnus Carlsen, in cooperation with esports behemoth Mobile Premier League (MPL). Leg 1 is a four-day rapid chess tournament that runs from March 31 to April 3, with games starting at 15:30 IST / 12 CEST every day. The time limit is 15 minutes plus 10 seconds.
Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool
The MPL Indian Chess Tour’s four legs are structured similarly to the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s Preliminary stages. Over the course of four days, 16 players engage in rapid chess once (15 minutes each player, with a 10-second increment after each move) for three points for a win and one point for a draw.
A win will earn the player $150, while a tie will earn $50. The total prize fund for this tournament is $18,000. Every draw will add $50 to the $3,000 Season Bonus Fund. The MPL event includes a $100,000 prize pool as well as golden tickets to the elite Tour, where India’s best will fight against the world’s best.
The winner of each event will advance to a Meltwater Champions Chess Tour stage as well as the $25,000 MPL Indian Chess Tour’s 8-player knockout final. Apart from the leg winners, the remaining players in the final will be picked by the organizing team.
