MPL Indian Chess Tour Establishment and Schedule

The MPL Indian Chess Tour is the world-renowned Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s first regional extension. Its introduction exemplifies India’s phenomenal growth in chess interest.

Play Magnus Group (PMG), created by World Champion Magnus Carlsen, is hosting the new MPL Indian Chess Tour in collaboration with esports giant Mobile Premier League (MPL). Leg 1 is a four-day rapid chess competition that takes place from March 31 to April 3, with games commencing at 15:30 IST / 12 CEST each day. 15m + 10s is the time limit.

Tournament Format, Rules, and Prize Money Pool

Each of the four legs of MPL Indian Chess Tour follow the same structure as the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s Preliminary stages. 16 players compete in rapid chess once over the course of four days (15 minutes each player, with a 10-second increment after each move) for three points for a win and one point for a tie.

A win will reward $150, while a tie is worth $50. The total prize pool is $18,000. Each draw will contribute $50 to a $3,000 Season Bonus Fund. The MPL event features a $100,000 prize pool as well as golden tickets to the elite Tour, where India’s best will compete against the best in the world.

The winner of each event will qualify for a stage of the main Meltwater Champions Chess Tour as well as the MPL Indian Chess Tour’s $25,000 worth 8-player knockout final. The remaining players in the final, aside from the leg winners, will be chosen by organizing team.
