The festival pays homage to Mother Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be born on September 8.

The fair has people from various faiths attending it each year. According to various historical records, the Bandra Fair has reportedly been around for 300 years old. According to popular legend, the celebration began after a local fisherman discovered a statue of St Mary floating in the Arabian Sea between 1700 and 1760. The legend states how the Koli Christian fisherman had already dreamt about discovering it earlier. Notably, the Mumbai Mount Mary Fair holds various similarities to the Monti Fest, celebrated by Goans, Karwaris, and Mangaloreans, and also coincides with its celebrations.
