Rhea Pillai is the daughter of Raymond Pillai and her mother’s name is Durr-e-shahwar Dhanrajgir. Both of her parents were of mixed communal heritage. Rhea’s father, Raymond Pillai was the son of a Malayali Hindu father and an Anglo-Indian mother, and she was raised as a Christian. Pillai’s mother, Durr-e-shahwar Dhanrajgir was the daughter of Maharaja Narsinghraj Dhanrajgir Gyan Bahadur, who was a Hindu and one of the top noblemen of Hyderabad state.
They belonged to a family of Muslim royals and had acted in one of the first Indian sound film Alam Ara in 1931. Rhea is also the great-granddaughter of India’s first female film director, Fatima Begum and happens to be the great-niece of Sultana. Sultana is one of the earliest film actresses from India who was the elder sister of her grandmother Zubeida.
In 2006, Rhea had a minor screen role also in the Hindi movie Corporate. Rhea Pillai is involved in the Art of the Living Foundation.

In 1984, Rhea Pillai married a US national named Micheal Vaz. They both separated in 1988 and got divorced in 1994. In 1998, she re-married actor Sanjay Dutt, but they got separated after a few years and she stated in 2006 that they still are close friends. Rhea after the divorce became popular in 2008 and details of the settlement were published by the tabloid MiD DAY, The Telegraph criticized Pillai for her materialism and her conduct in relation to Dutt.
She had a live-in relationship with Indian tennis player Leander Paes in the 2000s. The pair has a daughter, named Aiyana born in 2005. Rhea has now filed a case against Leander and his father alleging domestic violence in 2014 June at a local metropolitan court. The court found him guilty of different acts of domestic violence in 2022.
She is still living in her house despite having gotten two homes from Sanjay Dutt during divorce.
