The LAFC and Columbus Crew game, which starts at 4 PM ET / 1 PM PT and puts the title of the top team in the US on the line, is almost here. We examine how both clubs might line up for the main match at Lower.com Field on Saturday, December 9, with the MLS Cup trophy up for grabs.

The amazing form of LAFC

Coming into the match, LAFC is riding high on a seven-game winning streak across all competitions and a six-game winning streak on the road. Of those away games, four have seen no goals scored against them. Additionally, they didn’t let up a goal in either of their conference playoff encounters.

With what many believe to be his best starting lineup ever, Steve Cherundolo’s team easily defeated the Houston Dynamo in the semi-finals. The manager has now guided his team to the MLS Cup Final in his first two seasons in charge. We anticipate much of the same from the coach in the MLS Cup Final because there are no fresh injury worries for his team.

Columbus Crew has history on their side.

The Columbus Crew’s path to the all-or-nothing match was unimaginably more dramatic. They overcame FC Cincinnati, the holders of the Supporters’ Shield, and ultimately prevailed 3-2 to make history as the first away team in MLS Cup playoff history to overcome a two-goal deficit and advance from a single-leg round.

Saturday’s match will mark the Columbus Crew’s fourth trip to the MLS Cup Final and their third time serving as the event’s host. Their history is replete with highs and lows: the team won their first MLS Cup championship in 2008 after defeating the New York Red Bulls 3-1; they lost their second and last game, 2-1, at home against the Portland Timbers in 2015; yet, in 2020, they defeated the Seattle Sounders 3-0 in Columbus. The Crew enters the match unbeaten in 14 straight MLS meetings at Lower.com Field, having just suffered a single setback there this year (2-1 against Inter Miami).
