Major League Baseball 2023 season preview
The Major League Baseball 2023 season will begin with its Opening Day on Thursday, March 30. As all the teams undergo preparations for the new season, the Astros suffered a setback after star infielder José Altuve got injured with a fractured thumb.
The incident happened while playing for his country Venezuela, in the WBC. Following the injury, Altuve will be out for the first two months of the season. Aside from Altuve several MLB stars out with injuries during either the WBC or MLB Spring Training. New York Mets closing pitcher Edwin Díaz suffered a right knee patellar tendon tear, while Rhys Hoskins, the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman suffered a left knee ACL tear.
Gavin Lux, the Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman also suffered a right knee ACL tear. All of these injuries are season-ending injuries ahead of Opening Day.
Meanwhile, fans can’t wait to see star players like Ohtani Shohei, Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, and Paul Goldschmidt all tear up their respective leagues.
Aside from star players and injuries, teams like the Boston Red Sox are looking to bounce back following a last-place finish last season. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are looking for a first title since 2009. Another interesting take is the National League West Division race between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
MLB 2023 new format and rules
Interestingly, the new MLB 2023 season will feature a new format for the first time in MLB history. Following the new format, each of the 30 clubs will play against the 29 other teams throughout the season. In the previous seasons, each team played only selected opponents “inter-league”.
Moreover, the new season will also feature some new rules including a pitch clock timer. The pitch clock timer will enforce a limited and shorter amount of time for pitchers and batters between pitches. The MLB have added this new rule to shorten game durations.
Another new rule, is a ban on “shifting” infielders’ positioning to unorthodox positions. This rules requires all infielders to stick to the infield dirt and two on each side of second base. There will also be new and larger bases.
