Meaning Behind Iconic Skol Chant Explained

The iconic ‘Skol’ chant derives from the Swedish/Danish/Norwegian word “skål.” A “skål” typically refers to type of bowl that fits beverages and is shared between people.

Eventually, as the years passed, the term essentially evolved to mean “cheers”. Now, the Vikings fans use the term more as a celebratory cheer whenever the team scores, and during pre-game rituals.

The Vikings originally began using the term “Skol” ever since the franchise was introduced in the MFL back in 1961. Skol was used as a part of the franchise’s fight song.

Vikings ‘Skol’ Chant Origins

Despite the Vikings using the term “Skol” ever since 1961 as part of their fight song, the iconic “Skol” chant widely used today only became popular more recently. It was only when the Vikings moved to the U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016 that the Skol chant got popularized.

Now, ahead of every game, some Vikings fans bang the war drum, while other fans respond in by clapping their hands and yelling, “Skol!”. Notably, the Vikings fans also do the “Skol” chant whenever their team scores a touchdown.
