Sarkic’s sudden death has left the football world in shock, especially since he played a match just last Thursday.

Sarkic just recently started a game against Belgium on Thursday, where Montenegro lost 2-0. Despite the loss, Sarkic was named as the man of the match after making an impressive nine saves.

According to reports, Matija reportedly become ill at an apartment in the town of Budva after recently being on international duty. On seeing his weakened condition, his friends immediately called for an ambulance, however, he soon passed away around 6:30 am local time on Saturday.

Cause of death

According to various sources, Matija Sarkic reportedly fell ill in the Montenegrin town of Budva before shortly passing away. Sarkic reportedly signed for Millwall last summer after leaving Wolves.

Local police are now at the scene and an investigation is underway, but reports in Montenegro suggest the death was due to natural causes after he suddenly fell ill.

Matija Sarkic had 1 year and £650,000 gross annual salary remaining on his contract with Millwall.

Matija Sarkic was a professional footballer who was born on July 23, 1997, in Grimsby, United Kingdom. He mostly played as a goalkeeper for EFL Championship club Millwall and played for the Montenegro national team despite being born in England. During his youth, Sarkic came through the academy of teams like Anderlecht and Aston Villa.

Sarkic played for several clubs throughout his career, mainly in England, including Aston Villa, Wolves, Birmingham City, and Stoke City. He started out his career as a professional footballer in Anderlecht’s academy before joining Villa. The young goalkeeper signed a five-year contract and got loaned out to multiple clubs like Wigan Athletic, Stratford Town, Havant & Waterlooville, and Livingston.

He then moved to Wolves in 2020 but got loaned out to Shrewsbury Town, Birmingham City and Stoke City. He played for Stoke City up until Millwall signed him last summer.

One Birmingham fan stated:

Heartbreaking news this morning that our former goalkeeper Matija Sarkic has tragically passed away at the age of 26. Rest in peace. I’m absolutely speechless reading the news. RIP Matija Sarkic.”
