This shocking decision comes after Nyck De Vries secured his first-ever ABB FIA Formula E World Drivers’ Championship at the BMW I Berlin E-Prix. Mercedes have decided that they are going to pull out their investments from the sport and will begin further development in Formula 1.
Mercedes enjoyed a successful season by winning the title in a very hardly contested final round of the season where 13 drivers were up to the challenge for the top spot and 4 out of them were battling for the Championship.
Mercedes determined to pull out from Formula E next season
It may come as a shock to many motorsports fans who have supported Silver Arrows in Formula 1 and Formula E who will not participate in the next year’s Formula E season due to the delay in the development of the new Gen 3 car which will replace the current crop.
Mercedes even asked for theย important details regarding the structure of the series which could be crucial for the team in terms of managing their resources at almost every level for Formula 1 and other competitions.
Toto Wolff-
Mercedes AMG Petronas team principal Toto Wolff confirmed the decision from the hierarchy that the team is seriously considering withdrawing from the electric sport which was interfering with the Formula 1 development of the car.
โIf Mercedes were to leave, which we havenโt said, then, of course, you need to work on alternative strategies.ย We are in the sport not only because we guys like to compete and drive around in circles.ย But it is mainly a marketing and communications platform”.
Formula 1 or any other motorsport for that matter is a medium of marketing and provides a communication platform to the big manufacturing companies. However, the team that participates in the sport has a big functioning cost that demands a lot of investment and time.
In order to manage their resources and valuable time in the biggest motorsport that is Formula 1, Mercedes will pull out from the electric competition and will focus mainly on the top-end motorsports event that is Formula 1.
Even though Mercedes themselves have committed to shifting to electric-only road cars from 2025, this decision comes as a shock by Daimler to remove the team from the sport.
