In a rematch of the last edition’s final, Fiji defeated New Zealand 29-12 in the gold medal match and became the champions of 2022 Men’s Rugby World Cup Sevens. Prior to competing in the championship game, Fiji won elimination matches against Wales, Samoa, and Australia. Meanwhile, Ireland defeated Australia in the third-place match and claimed the bronze medal.
Joseva Talacolo and Kaminielo Rasaku scored tries for Fiji in the first two minutes of the match to jump out to an early 12-0 lead. Fiji owned the first half, and when they went into halftime with a 24-5 lead, it appeared as though they would win their first world championship since 2005. But after a quick touchdown for New Zealand in the second half and two Fijian yellow cards, which briefly brought them down to five men, New Zealand were given a chance to recover. But shortly after, New Zealand witnessed one of their own men being sin-binned, and Pilipo Bukayaro’s last-ditch try sealed the game for Fiji.
