The Indian junior men’s hockey team quickly launched an attack. Japan was able to stave off the Indian attackers, though. The sides went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0 after Japan came close to taking the lead late in the first quarter but the Indian defence held firm.
Early in the following quarter, against the foow of play, Japan broke the tie as Kumpei Yasuda slid it past the keeper from the left. To score an equaliser, India upped the tempo and began to put pressure on the Japanese defence. However, the Indian team, led by Uttam Singh, was unable to prevail due to the Japanese goalkeeper. At halftime, Japan was in the lead 1-0.
Following the break, Japan came back stronger and contained India inside their own half. As the Indian team rallied to draw the game, Araijeet Singh Hundal rifled in the equaliser.
India immediately went on offensive, winning several penalty corners, the last of which gave them an immediate advantage. Sharda Nand Tiwari hammered it into the top corner, giving India the advantage.
In the fourth quarter, the Indian team came out firing and was eager to extend their lead. Uttam Singh, the captain of India, scored from a penalty corner midway through the time to give his team a two-goal advantage. Japan made a quick counterpunch effort, but the Indian defence stood firm and eventually brought the match to a 3-1 conclusion.
