This year’s edition marks the 10th edition of the Under-21 hockey tournament.
Team Indian are placed in Pool A alongside Pakistan, Japan, Thailand and Chinese Taipei. Meanwhile, Pool B includes Korea, Malaysia, Oman, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan.
Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 hockey format
Ahead of the competition, the top five teams – India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea and Malaysia – received a direct entry. The teams received the advantage based on their current rankings. Meanwhile, the other teams – Bangladesh, Oman, Thailand, Uzbekistan, and Chinese Taipei secured their spots following their performances in the Men’s Junior AHF Cup held in Muscat, Oman, back in January.
The upcoming tournament will begin with single-legged round-robin matches. Following which, the top two teams from both pools will qualify for the semi-finals. Meanwhile the teams in the third and fourth positions will compete for the 5-8 place classification. Teams that finish in the fifth rank in both pools will go head-to-head while trying to avoid finishing in the tenth place.
The semi-final matches will take place on May 31, while the third-place match and the final match will take place on June 1.
Notable, the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 will serve as a qualifying event for the upcoming FIH Junior Men’s World Cup 2023. The tournament will take place in Malaysia later this year from December 5 to 16. The top three teams in the Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023, along with hosts Malaysia, will qualify for the event.

India will begin their 2023 campaign against Chinese Taipei on May 24. Meanwhile, the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan hockey match is scheduled on May 27.

Men’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 hockey Indian squad
India are the reigning junior Asia Cup hockey champions and will be led Uttam Singh and Boby Singh Dhami as the captain and vice-captain respectively. The Indian team are in good form going into the tournament, following their victory at the 10th Sultan of Johor Cup last year.
Prior to leaving for Oman for the competition, the India teams were training at SAI, Bengaluru. There, they played a few matches against the senior India men’s team.
