Meanwhile, Malaysia’s aspirations of winning the Hero Asia Cup for the first time were crushed on Wednesday when Korea triumphed in a thrilling 2-1 final victory at the GBK Sports Arena. The Koreans have now won the renowned trophy for the fifth time. In 1994, 1999, 2009, and 2013, they were crowned champions.

Korea appeared to be a confident bunch going into the final, having won the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in December last year, a place they earned by beating India in a 3-3 tie on Tuesday. The team, which included veteran players, recovered in time to put up a strong fight against the Malaysian team, which appeared to be on track to win the tournament after not losing a single match.

In the waning minutes of the game, Malaysia had several chances to score, one of which occurred when Faizal Saari took a shot on goal, but the Korean goalkeeper was on target to make a fantastic stop.

The Korean defense, regarded as one of the strongest in Asian hockey, delivered on its promise and kept the score close. When they were awarded a penalty stroke, they had a chance to expand their lead to 3-1, but the chance was squandered when the Malaysian goalkeeper stopped Jang Jonghyun’s attempt.
