On inaugural day of 2022 Tour Finals, reigning world champion Carlsen and Chess.com Global Championships winner Wesley So faced off and despite best attempts from So, he struggled as Carlsen ultimately prevailed by score of 2.5-1.5 to win $7,500. Meanwhile, Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated Indian teenager Arjun Erigaisi 2.5-0.5 to finish tie in just three games and bag $7,500 in prize money. In the matchup between the competition’s youngest and oldest players, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov triumphed over Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa via score of 2.5-1.5.

Elsewhere, Vietnamese speed specialist Liem Quang Le and Dutch ace Anish Giri played out four draws in close contest. The match entered tiebreaks after players were tied at 2-2 score. In order to win this tie-breaker, Giri won first game and then earned the necessary draw in second game to seal victory. On Wednesday, Arjun Erigaisi will attempt to avenge his recent loss against Carlsen and Liem will face So. In other matches, Pragg will face-off against Giri and Mamedyarov will clash against Duda.

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 9 – Tour Finals 2022 Prize Money Pool Distribution

Each four-game tie winner will receive $7,500 in prize money, but if a tiebreaker is necessary, the winner will receive $5,000 as opposed to the loser’s $2,500. As a result, there will be a $210,000 total prize pool for the 2022 Tour Finals, and if any player manages to win all seven rounds, he will receive $52,500.
