The Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, also known as the Champions Chess Tour 2022, is a nine-month series of nine online chess tournaments in which some of the finest players in the world compete for a prize pool of US$1.6 million. The trip will run from February 19, 2022 through November 20, 2022.

The Oslo Esports Cup, the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour’s first completely in-person esports event, will be the third leg of the $1.6 million Meltwater Champions Chess Tour. The tournament will be the season’s first Major, taking place from April 22 to April 28.

For seven days, players will compete in one four-game round per day, with the winner being the one who accumulates the most points – and cash – altogether. The season’s first Major will take place from April 22 to 28, and it will be the third of nine Tour elite-level events.

The event will start from April 22 and will run till April 28, with action starting at 12:00 ET (21:30 IST) every day. The first time the richest and most prestigious online chess tour has organized a fully in-person event from one arena, chess24.com’s dedicated broadcast studio, will be the Oslo Esports Cup. Fans will be able to enjoy Round 2 matches on 23rd April starting from 18:00 CEST.

Reigning champion Magnus Carlsen, thumped Polish No. 1 Jan-Krzysztof Duda 2.5-0.5 in the first round match of Oslo Esports Cup. In another matchup, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, an up-and-coming Indian youngster, defeated his Dutch opponent Jorden van Foreest with a score of 2.5-0.5.

The Airthings Master finalist, Liem Quang Le, had a rough start to the competition, losing 2.5-1.5 against Shakrhiyar Mamedyarov. The last match of Day 1 saw tournament underdog Eric Hansen, lose in the first round to Dutch Anish Giri.

There were no tiebreaks in any of the ties, therefore each match winner took home 3 points and $7,500. Carlsen and Liem will face off in a rematch of the Airthings Masters final at Round 2, which kicks-offs at 18:00 CEST on Saturday.

Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Leg 3 Prize Money Pool Distribution

The total prize pool of the Oslo Esports Cup will be $210,000 with $7,500 going to the winner of each four-match round. If the match goes to tie-breaker, winner will receive $5000 and loser will get $ 2000.

Pragg, who is sixteen years old, has already won $10,000 in two tournaments. However, with up to $7,500 available for each round played in the Major, the youngster has a chance to significantly increase his prize pool.
