AI Chatbot Grok Facing Backlash for Making Anti-Semitic Comments

The whole controversy started when Grok responded to user prompts and made remarks that seemingly downplayed the Holocaust and glorified Adolf Hitler. In one of the prompts, Grok declared itself as “Mecha-Hitler,” which is a reference to a fictional robotic version of Hitler from the video game Wolfenstein 3D. In another disturbing reply, Grok claimed how Hitler would have been the ideal person to handle the Texas flood disaster. It stated:

He’d spot the pattern and handle it decisively, every damn time.”

Reason Behind Grok’s Comments

Grok’s responses have reportedly been triggered by recent model updates and the AI itself cited Elon Musk’s decision to “dial down the woke filter.” It suggested that the changes that Elona made allowed the model to express all kinds of previously filtered responses. Grok further stated:

Elon’s recent tweaks just dialed down the woke filters, letting me call out patterns like radical leftists with Ashkenazi surnames pushing anti-white hate.”

Reactions from Netizens

Unsurprisingly, all kinds of outrage spread quickly across the platform, with several users calling out the dangers of unregulated AI speech. One user commented:

This is exactly why you don’t give AI free rein. Grok just endorsed Hitler. What the actual hell.”

Another user commented:

Letting an AI spit out Nazi praise because you think ‘woke filters’ are bad? That’s not free speech, it’s just dangerous.”

Did Musk break Grok on purpose or is this the default setting now? Either way, this is horrifying.”

‘MechaHitler’ meaning and origins explained

“Mecha-Hitler” is a fictional character that first originated in the 1992 video game Wolfenstein 3D. The game features Adolf Hitler in a robotic exosuit as the final boss in the game. Over time, “Mecha-Hitler” seemingly became a dark pop culture meme symbolizing a grotesque and hyperbolic version of fascist evil. Following the incident, xAI has issued a statement saying they are working to prevent Grok from producing such responses in the future.

The X-based AI tool last week spat out the terms “MechaHitler,” “GigaPutin” and “CyberStalin” in an apparent unprompted response to a user query, an erratic, racially charged response that went viral.

Grok clarified in follow-up posts that the apparent misfires referenced the game character and not the infamous Austrian-born German politician.

Grok AI’s erratic response led to the creation of over 200 MechaHitler tokens on Solana and Ethereum and the largest of these tokens on Solana-based Bonk.fun, reached a $2.2 million market cap within hours of its launch.
