The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has come to a close with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen clenching his maiden F1 World Championship title against Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton at the Yas Marina Circuit on Sunday. What a dramatic final lap it was between the two drivers. It was Hamilton who was very close to winning a record-breaking eighth title but after Nicholas Latifi crashed in the 54th lap, Verstappen got the better of Hamilton with the help of a second-safety car.
It was Latifi’s crash which appeared to be a turning point in this historic race as Hamilton was left trying to win the race with downgrading hard tyres. Meanwhile with the help of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, the Dutch driver overtook Hamilton and secured historic win.

Verstappen was born in Haselt, Belgium on 30th September 1997 to father Jos Verstappen and mother Sophie Kumpen. The names of his parents do ring a bell since they were both racers as well- Jos Verstappen is a Dutch former F1 driver and Sophie Kumpen competed in Karting. He also has a sister whose name is Victoria Jane Verstappen. He is dating girlfriend Kelly Piquet.
By the time he turned 6, Verstappen became a regular at karting in Genk, Belgium. And in 2005, he attracted a lot of attention when he took part in his first-ever championship, the Belgium Championship mini (VAS), in which he managed to win all 21 races. In 8 years’ time, the Dutch kid had won almost everything there was for him to win at in karting, also claiming the World KZ Championship at Varennes-sur-Allier in France.
At 16 years of age, Verstappen was unbelievable at the F3 championship where he won his sixth race following which he gained six consecutive victories in the series, occupying the third position in the overall rankings. At 18 he got the title of the youngest Formula One driver in history upon joining the Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2015. In his debut season itself he secured 49 points and managed to take two fourth places.
In 2016 he joined Red Bull racing where he raced alongside Daniel Ricciardo. In what his debut grand prix for his team in Spain, Verstappen did the unimaginable when he defeated 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen. By the end of 2016, the Dutch driver became the hottest young talent in F1, having grabbed the fifth position overall in the 2016 World Championship.
He ended up with 10 race wins in the 2021 season of Formula 1 to win his first drivers’ championship title and with it become the first Dutch driver to win the prestigious prize.
