Despite losing the battle, Wood will still receive almost $500,000 in compensation because he is one of the top featherweight boxers. Following his stellar win, Mauricio Lara, the newly crowned featherweight champion, will be eligible for a $350,000 confirmed purse. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, this bout’s PPV revenue will reportedly be split equally between the fighters.
Leigh Wood’s celebration in Nottingham was marred by Mauricio Lara, who trailed on the scorecards, with a spectacular left hook in the seventh round. The Mexican now holds the WBA featherweight championship, but for significant stretches of the bout, it looked as though Wood would simply defend his title after getting off to a strong start.

Mauricio Lara vs Leigh Wood: match events & post-match reactions
Although Wood was initially shaken by Lara, he quickly bounced back and started to establish a solid lead with the ringside judges. The second half of the battle started with Wood in full command, as he slowed down the unrelenting Mexican. Although the fight appeared to be going in his favor, Lara’s left hook altered everything. Wood was floored with only a few seconds left in the seventh round and despite beating the count, Wood’s trainer Ben Davison wisely decided to call it a match and tossed the towel into the ring.
Prior to Saturday’s bout, Eddie Hearn announced Mauricio Lara and Leigh Wood had a rematch clause in place. Nevertheless, the Mexican may now pursue a trilogy rematch with Josh Warrington. That may clear the way for the newly crowned WBA featherweight champion to challenge Warrington this summer in order to defend his belt, with Wood having the choice to face the victor of that contest.
