Prediction
Matteo Berrettini and Dominic Thiem are set to meet again for the sixth time tomorrow at the semifinals of the Swiss Open.
Between two top 10 players who are currently displaced from that title by ranking, this is a really difficult decision. After spending 14 months off the tour due to various wrist problems, former world number four Dominic Thiem is on a long road to recovery. Matteo Berrettini is currently ranked 15th after his 2021 Wimbledon final points dropped off.
Due to a minor hand surgery he had after the Miami Open in March, Berrettini missed the entire clay season. When he resumed playing for the grass swing, he was off to an excellent start. The Italian won the Stuttgart Open after defeating Andy Murray in the finals, winning the first contest he participated in after making a comeback.
Berrettini won his second straight title at the Queen’s Club Championships. After winning back-to-back titles on grass, the 26-year-old is currently riding an 11-match winning streak. However, this week, he successfully transitioned back to clay, with a three-set victory over Pedro Martinez serving as a positive outcome on this surface. But Thiem, who is currently ranked 274 in the world, is one of this generation’s top clay-court players, and the 28-year-old is certainly regaining his confidence.
Given that Berrettini hasn’t played on clay at all this year, it’s impossible to predict how he’ll perform. However, if he can outlast Thiem, he will probably prevail.
