Head to Head: 3-2

Four of their five encounters have taken place on clay, with Berrettini triumphing in their lone match on hardcourt at the 2020 US Open. Ruud has improved a lot lately, but the Italian still plays this surface better overall.

Five previous encounters between the two have resulted in a 3-2 head-to-head victory for Ruud. At the 2022 Swiss Open, he triumphed in three sets in their most recent meeting.

Prediction

Tuesday’s 2022 US Open quarterfinal matchup features 2022 French Open runner-up Casper Ruud taking against 2021 Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini.

Ruud qualified for a fourth-round matchup with Corentin Moutet with victories over Kyle Edmund, Tim van Rijthoven, and Tommy Paul. The Norwegian dominated the first set, winning five straight games to hand his opponent a breadstick.

In the second set as well, Ruud maintained his control, breaking Moutet’s serve twice on the way to winning it. In the third set, World No. 7 had a 4-2 advantage and appeared to be winning. The Frenchman came back, though, and won the tie-break that followed after forcing the set into extra time.

In the fourth set, Ruud recovered swiftly and took the lead 4-1. This time, he didn’t make any blunders, and he broke his opponent’s serve once again to win 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-2. For the first time in his career, he has officially advanced to the US Open quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Andy Murray, Hugo Grenier, and Nicolas Jarry were all defeated by Matteo Berrettini as the Italian advanced to the fourth round of the Grand Slam.

Recently, the Italian defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spanish player had a commanding early advantage and was up 3-0 in the first set. He was able to win the set later on with this alone. The Spaniard had a break advantage in the second set as well, but Berrettini mounted a comeback to draw the match and then won the tie-break to win the set.

The Italian continued to push forward in the third set as well, twice breaking his rival’s serve to win it. Davidovich Fokina improved his game when he was up against it to win the fourth set and force a decider.
In the decisive set, Berrettini had a 2-0 lead but squandered it. But he managed to get another serve break to go up 3-1. He maintained his advantage all the way to the finish and finally broke the Spaniard’s service to win 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. The Italian has now made it to the last eight here for the third time.

Although both players favour their forehands more, Berrettini’s power off the wing is superior. In the past, Ruud has had trouble defending against that shot, this time, he will need to be more ready. The Norwegian’s backhand is steadier, which gives him a somewhat more well-rounded game.

This game has the potential to be close throughout. Although Berrettini would likely prevail, Ruud will likely be the favourite because of his slightly better recent performance.
