The youngster has gained national attention for his unorthodox sling movement, and he has now implemented it in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022.
Pathirana made his Chennai Super Kings debut on Sunday at Wankhede Stadium. The right-arm fast took the prized wicket of Shubman Gill on his first ball while bowling against the Gujarat Titans.
The batsman was absolutely caught off guard by the fast full delivery. The bat hit Gill low on the pad because he was late on the shot. The on-field umpire immediately gave it, but the Gujarat opener went for the DRS; the impact was in line with the leg stump.

With a slower delivery, Pathirana got the better of Gujarat Titans skipper Hardik Pandya in his second over. Pandya, who had been thoroughly duped, played it early and ended up with a leading edge, which was caught by Shivam Dube at mid-off.

As a replacement for Adam Milne, the Sri Lanka pacer was drafted into the CSK team. A hamstring issue forced the New Zealand speedster to withdraw from the season.
He was a reserve player for Chennai Super Kings last season. Prior to the start of the IPL 2021, he and Maheesh Theekshana were seen practising with MS Dhoni and Robin Uthappa at the CSK training camp in Chennai.
