Martina’s mother’s name was Jana, and she married Miroslav Navratil, who gave her the surname Navratilova. Martina’s father was a ski instructor who later became her first tennis coach. Martina began playing tennis at the age of four. Martina won her first Czechoslovakia national championship when she was 15, and she made her US Lawn Association debut and went pro in 1974. Martina Navratilova won her first singles victory in Orlando after going professional in 1974. She finished second in both the French and Australian Opens in 1975.
