Marlin Briscoe, the first Black quarterback’s coach in the American Football Team, died on Monday, June 27, at the age of 76.

Briscoe, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, was a standout quarterback for Omaha University. When he became 22, the Denver Broncos picked him as a defender in the 14th round while 1968.

Angela Marriott, Briscoe’s daughter, informed The News Agency that her dad died from pneumonia at a doctor’s office in Norwalk, California. He had been admitted to the hospital due to leg peripheral neuropathy. “He’s made an enormous commitment to the sport,” remarked Marriott. “I wish that he maintains to be acknowledged for his services.”

Briscoe, dubbed “The Magician,” attended Omaha South Academy in high school and Omaha University in college from 1963 to 1967. Later, the nickname of the institution was modified to the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Briscoe lobbied for a chance to try for the running back position after being picked as a defender in the 14th round by the Denver Broncos in 1968. Briscoe made history as the AFL’s first black franchise quarterback on September 29, 1968, against the Boston Patriots. He later played running back for both the Buffalo Bills for the remainder of his season. The Miami Dolphins won two Super Bowls throughout his brief tenure with the franchise. Briscoe also had time with the San Diego Chargers, Detroit Lions, & New England Patriots.

Briscoe relocated to Los Angeles after retiring from elite sports and quickly established himself as a good business broker specializing in debt securities. He was hooked on heroin at one time in his life, but he was rehabilitated following a lengthy treatment program. In the twenty-first century, he was the director of the Boys & Girls Club in Long Beach, California. He is also noted for establishing a children’s football camp. Briscoe was an ardent critic of racial inequality all his life.

While his wife’s name is not known, he was married and had a daughter named Angela. His net worth stood at $1.5 million.
