Prediction

Maria Sakkari and Aryna Sabalenka will compete against one another on Wednesday in a group match of the 2022 WTA Finals.

Sakkari played her first match in the first group game against Jessica Pegula who is now up against Ons Jabeur next. The Greek allowed her opponent to tie the match at 2-2 after establishing a 2-0 lead in the first set. Sakkari once again went up a break in the ninth game, but she lost her lead very soon. Sakkari made a third break to bring the score to 6-5, but she lost serve and was unable to complete the set. She was able to take the set in the next tie-break, though. The Greek gained an early 3-0 lead in the second set, but Pegula won the following three games in a row to square the match.

After that, both players continued to serve consistently, and the American also avoided a couple match points at 6-5. Sakkari triumphed in the third tie-break to win the match 7-6 (6), 7-6. (4).

On the other hand, Sabalenka’s first match was against two-time Grand Slam champion Ons Jabeur. The first set ended in a loss for the Belarusian due to two breaks and outplay. In the first six games of the second set, which got off to a wild start, five serves were broken. Sabalenaka had the upper hand and was up 4-2. She lost a set point on Jabeur’s serve at 5-3 and was unable to serve out the set on her own in the following game. The Belarusian won the tie-break as soon as the set went into a second period.

Jabeur attacked first in the last set, gaining the lead 3-1 after going up a break. Sabalenka leaned against the wall while raising her level. In the final rally, she broke the Tunisian’s serve to win by scores of 3-6, 7-6 (5), and 7-5.

Both the players went through ups and down. Despite the fact that Sakkari played much better in her previous game here, she can become uptight under pressure. Sabalenka, who has triumphed in a number of close matches this season, could pull off yet another escape if this match too goes down to the wire.
