Earlier, on Wednesday, the official X account of FC Barcelona revealed that their defensive midfielder has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and suffered a related injury to the lateral meniscus.

An official statement of the account reads, “Tests carried out on Wednesday have confirmed that Marc Bernal has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, along with an associated lateral meniscus injury. He will undergo surgery in the coming days, after which an update will be provided.”

The club further revealed that the Spanish footballer had suffered injury during 2-1 win game against Rayo Vallecano.

He sustained the injury during stoppage time. Barcelona explained that the injury is “a setback for the young midfielder, who had started all three league games for the Blaugrana so far this season.”

As of now, the club didn’t specify a recovery timeline, leaving football enthusiasts uncertain about his return but he could end up missing the entire season.

Bernal’s injury is similar to the one sustained by Gavi while on Spain duty in November of last year, an injury from which Gavi is still recovering almost 10 months later. Bernal’s recovery should follow a similar timeframe if there are no setbacks so he should be out till the 2025/26 season.

Born May 26, 2007, Marc Bernal Casas, is a professional footballer, who plays as a defensive midfielder for Barcelona. Growing up in Berga, Barcelona, Catalonia, the young footballer attended the youth academy of CE Berga and later moved to La Masia at the age of 6.

In 2023, the professional footballer signed his first contract with FC Barcelona, and made his debut on August 27 against Logroñés. Standing at 1.91 m (6 ft 3 in), Bernal was called for a training camp for the Spain U16s in 2022.
